Storytime from Space

We had a super special guest this week, Patricia Tribe from Storytime in Space . She brought in a video of Astronaut Mike Hopkins reading Max goes to the Moon from space. She also answered all of our space questions and did a really cool activity with us that showed us how the moon stays in orbit around the earth with gravity. Thanks Patricia!

Absolutely One Thing by Lauren Child

Song: 5 Green and speckled frogs
Game: Hide-the-Object with wooden numbers
Song: 2, 4, 6, 8
Craft: counting with stickers (miss meg’s storytime)

How it went: There are so many counting books it was really hard to narrow it down! Absolutely One Thing by Lauren Child was my favourite. As a parent, I’m always telling my kids they have one more minute to do something or other abstract amounts of time. This book attempts to explains those concepts to kids. Its pretty funny. I had my biggest group of storytimers yet, 17!  All things considered it went really well!

Extra Books:
One too many by Gianna Marino
Zero by Kathyrn Otoshi

Simon Says

Surprise Box: Dog and Cat puppet

How it Went: It was the first fall storytime with a brand new group of storytimers. I sang a new opening song, What do you think my name is? that I got from library geek.  I’m doing the surprise box again, with something from my theme hidden in side (today it was a dog and a cat puppet).I give them clues and the whoever guesses right gets to open the box. It took a while to get all the wiggles out and get everyone settled but we had a good time after that. The kids were getting pretty wiggly by the end so we played simon says at the end.

5 Speckled Frogs song and flannelboard
Plant flowers!

Surprise Box: Frog

How it Went: It was the last storytime until fall 😦 They loved 999 Frogs Wake Up and Mushrooms in the Rain. Everyone liked planting flowers in their own little pots however it was time consuming. If I do it again, I’ll put the dirt in the pots before hand and have only 2 different kids of seeds to choose from.

Big Sarah’s Little Boots by Paulette Bourgeois

Activities: Harold and the Purple Crayon feltboard  by Storytime Katie
Going on a Bear Hunt
I Went Walking, based on Sue Williams book with puppets!

How it Went: I had a big group today, 12 kids, so naturally things got a little rowdy when we went on a bear hunt! It was good fun though.  The books all went over really well. They also had a lot of fun playing with the puppets after I did I Went Walking.

Surprise Box: Superhero Mask

How it Went: There are so many superhero books to choose from it was really hard to narrow it down to four! Everyone really liked the Astonishing Secrets of Awesome Man. The kids named our superhero in the action rhyme and feltboard “awesome man”. Mighty max was probably the least favourite. We decorate superhero masks that I cut out of foam sheets with markers and stickers. Next time we’ll do capes too!

Make comics (from picklebums printables)

How it went: I was pretty excited to do a comic book  storytime especially for some of the kids who haven’t read any comics yet. Everyone was pretty excited and chatting a bunch during the stories so we played simon says instead of the story I had planned. The older kids really enjoyed making their own comics. It was a little hard for some of the younger kids but they still enjoyed colouring.

Other Books: A trip to the Bottom of the World by Frank Viva
